to start, i completely loved la dame aux camellias, which verdi's la traviata is based on. it was the most touching, beautiful novel and made me cry buckets. definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the opera or needs some perspective on love.
the brief, wondrous life of oscar wao was a really smart, fun novel with a lot of similarities to the gabriel garcia marquez-esque magic realism south american novels. it had such lively characters and made me laugh (and cry) out loud.
i loved light years. it has a lot of empty characters searching for meaning in their lives but it ended up being so poignant and beautifully written.
"Their life is mysterious, it is like a forest; from far off it seems a unity, it can be comprehended, described, but closer it begins to separate, to break into light and shadow, the density blinds one. Within there is no form, only prodigious detail that reaches everywhere: exotic sounds, spills of sunlight, foliage, fallen trees, small beasts that flee at the sound of a twig-snap, insects, silence, flowers."
and where'd you go bernadette was just hilarious. she has great things to say about canadians too (cough cough). i kept laughing out loud on the chicago red line and garnering some strange looks.
and as always, if you ever need THE book recommendation.... whenever i'm feeling down and need to read something beautiful, i go back to the history of love by nicole krauss. it's whimsical, funny, sweet and amazing.
if anyone wants to recommend me some books, please do! xo
