obviously, i would be coincidentally be reading edith wharton's "the age of innocence" the weekend my family decided to go on a road trip to the hudson valley.
the landscape on the hudson is very beautiful - it feels almost like an american version of going to provence or tuscany. however, being from canada, it seems somewhat unneccessary to drive all the way to new york state for beautiful landscapes when we're surrounded by beauty here in ontario. there is something fun about being in america though, steeped in an older european history...
our inn overlooked the hudson river - i took this picture one morning at breakfast. when we weren't wining and dining, we had time to visit the storm king outdoor sculpture gallery, filled with amazing large scale pieces by lichtenstein and other artists:
and there is something cool about being in old towns like rhinebeck & places with old huguenot houses. where i am in "the age of innocence," newland archer has just left for his honeymoon in rhinebeck - it's fun to read about the decorum and repression and importance of status in that old world of new york wealth. we visited FDR's house, as i come from a family of history buffs (i fit more into the historical fiction or music history category).
(some shots of eleanor roosevelt's rose garden.)
(walking across the hudson with my mum)
mainly, it was a beautiful weekend for relaxing, definitely not practising, walking around, and wining and dining.
i'll dedicate my next post to some of the delicious eats we had. mmm.
